Michael Leo (Mike) Sullivan was born to Bob and Estelle Sullivan October 2, 1950 in Galveston, Texas. He was proud to be what was better known to locals as BOI (born on the island). Mike’s battle with lung and brain cancer ended on October 10, 2012, when he died peacefully at his home surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene Sullivan, daughter Kim Mathes of Houston, son Ryan Williams and wife Ginger of Dallas, brothers Jimmy Sullivan, David Sullivan and wife Becky of Santa Fe, TX. Grandchildren are Chase Mathes, Emily Mathes, Mitch Williams and honorary grandchild, Jaala Savoy of Moss Bluff, LA. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Gerrie Welch of Lake Jackson, TX, niece Jenny Sullivan and nephews Jeremiah Sullivan , Jacob Sullivan, Jay Welch and Joel Welch.
Mike grew up in Santa Fe, TX, a small town outside of Galveston, where he and his brothers, Jimmy and David, spent most of their time exploring the neighborhood and many hours together fishing, hunting, riding bikes and enjoying the great outdoors as only children of that era were free to do. The spirit of the great outdoors remained a part of Mike’s life until the end.
After graduation from Santa Fe High School in 1968, Mike attended Alvin Jr. College. He was employed as a welder at Union Carbide in Texas City for 10 years before his spirit of adventure led him to Buffalo, Wyoming. There he helped establish a partnership in a welding company. Five years later he was ready for another adventure and began his career in the Explosives Industry. He soon relocated to New Braunfels, Texas. There he met his wife of 20 years, Darlene Sullivan. As his career in the Explosives Industry advanced, Mike and Darlene relocated to Moss Bluff, Louisiana. At the early age of 48, Mike suffered a stroke and the career he loved the most came to an end. He worked diligently to regain his speech and cognition deficits and was able to take off on yet another adventure. Not one to let life’s stumbling blocks stop him, he began a legacy that will live on in the lives of many who were fortunate enough to obtain custom woodwork that reflected his sense of perfection.
Mike and Darlene relocated to Salado in 2004 when her job transferred them back to Texas. Mike soon had his dream workshop and remained busy fishing, hunting, golfing, gardening, and of course, woodworking. They joined Salado United Methodist Church where Mike was involved in many activities. Not only was he a part of the Methodist Men’s group, but he was also instrumental in the children’s music and missions program, M&M’s. Recently he served on the planning committee for a Columbarium, despite his failing health.
Those who knew and loved Mike will miss him dearly, especially his quick wit and ability to make everyone laugh. Never one to be without a joke or kind word, he made those who knew him smile.
A celebration of life will be conducted by Rev. Travis Franklin on Saturday, October 20 at 2:00 PM at Salado United Methodist Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please honor Mike with donations to Sullivan Memorial Fund, Salado United Methodist Church, 650 Royal Street, Salado, Tx 76571.
