Joyce Jean McKinney was born August 30, 1933 in Holland, Texas and died peacefully at Canyon Creek Memory Care in Temple, Texas on July 22, 2025. Joyce spent her early life on the family farm with her parents and four siblings. She attended Pecan School during her elementary years and graduated from Holland High School in 1950. It was there that she met the love of her life, Jeff McKinney. They were married at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bartlett, Texas in December 1952 while Jeff was on leave from the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. Later, when he was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Hutchinson, Kansas, their first son, Michael, was born. Two daughters, Debra and Kathleen, were added to the family after his discharge and relocation to Austin, Texas. During this time, Joyce attended Brackenridge Nursing School and became an RN. She worked in several hospitals and a doctor's office during the years she was raising her three children. Joyce was always active in her church, and was a leader in women's ministry at both Woodlawn Baptist Church and Bannockburn Baptist Church in Austin. She also taught a Ladies Bible study class on a weekly basis and was a Bible Study Fellowship group leader as well. After retirement, she and Jeff relocated to Salado, Texas. They were active members of FBC Belton for over twenty-five years and both served as leaders for the Thursday Club Alzheimer's Respite in Temple, Texas for many years. Joyce was proud of her “Texas farm girl” roots and loved gardening and the outdoors. She was also an excellent cook and loved to hostess gatherings for family and friends in her home. She especially loved children and often planned special times just for them. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Flora Steglich; her husband, Jeff McKinney; two daughters, Debra Lynn McKinney and Kathleen McKinney Vitek; her siblings Agnes Walseth, Maurice Steglich, Lenwood Steglich, and Dorothy Caperton. She is survived by her son, Michael McKinney (and wife Susan); grandson Scott McKinney (and wife Erin); granddaughter Elizabeth McKinney Sauppe; great granddaughter Mattie McKinney; great grandson Grayson McKinney; son-in-law Ron Vitek and a large extended family. Joyce's was a life well lived as she valued her faith in God and love for family above all else. We were blessed to call her Mom, Mimi, Aunt Joyce and friend. She will be forever in our hearts as we look forward to being together again one day. The family would like to thank Tender Mercies Home Care and Canyon Creek Memory Care for their exceptional and compassionate care of Joyce during her lengthy illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Salvation Army.
