James Patrick McManus Obituary

Services for James Patrick McManus were held October 24, 2015 at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Salado, Texas at a 2 PM Mass and reception which followed.

James Patrick Anthony McManus was brought up in a small mining village in Scotland. He graduated dux of his class and went on to medical school at Edinburgh University. He did his internship in Edinburgh and Cambridge. He then served in the Royal Army Medical Corps as part of his National Service in Germany where he met his beautiful wife, Rachel Chenard. Jim went on to do his medical residency in Edinburgh.

The family moved to Boston when Jim was awarded a Carnegie fellowship at Harvard. After two years, he returned to Edinburgh as senior lecturer in the Department of Medicine at Edinburgh University. In 1974, the family moved to Quebec City. Canada where Jim became Professor of Medicine at Laval University. Five years later, they moved to central Texas where Jim contributed to the development of Texas A&M Medical School as Professor of Medicine until 1999.

Jim was an excellent teacher and lecturer. His studies led to sixty-eight publications and six chapters in medical textbooks. He gave lectures on all five continents: he and Rachel were truly world travelers.

Jim and Rachel had four children: Michele, Martine, Renee, and Andree. Michele is married to Cyril Kazmierczak, they have a son Iain: Martine is married to Rajah Dagstani and they have two sons Emile and Sebastian.

Jim loved to travel and ski. He taught Rachel to ski during their honeymoon in Zermatt. Jim and Rachel made full use of their condominium in Crested Butte. Jim boasted at 78 that he was still skiing the black pistes. Each year they spent September and October in the Pyrenees and Paris until Rachel’s death in 2014. They had been married 52 years. Their travels led Jim and Rachel to have extensive friendships at home and abroad.
