Grover Cleveland Dement, Jr., 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at the Meridian Senior Living Community in Temple, Texas. Services will be at the Salado Church of Christ starting with a visitation at 3:00PM, service at 4:00PM and internment to follow. Joseph Keyes will officiate.
He was born January 18, 1922, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Grover Cleveland Dement, Sr. and Ruth Davis Dement. Grover graduated from East Nashville High School in 1942. He served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942 through 1946 as an aviation mechanic, reaching the rank of Corporal. In Birmingham, Alabama, on December 25, 1946, Grover married Doris E. Chapman of Nashville, and together they raised a family of two children.
In Birmingham, Grover worked as a radiographical technician for Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory until his retirement in 1986. Grover and Doris moved to Belton, Texas, in 1993 and have resided in the area ever since, except for five years in Columbia, Tennessee.
Grover was a very kind and considerate person with a great sense of humor. He enjoyed playing softball in his youth, and bowling was his passion throughout his life. He was an avid Auburn football fan. He also enjoyed board and card games with family and friends. Grover read and re-read every Louis L’Amour book. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 0019, Columbia, TN. He also was a member of the Salado Church of Christ.
Grover is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Doris; son, John Dement and his wife, Susan; daughter, Connie Cryar, and her husband, Keith. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Nan Cryar, Clare Cryar, Amy Dement, Lane Cryar, and David Dement.
