Elizabeth Roberts Shapard Obituary

 

Elizabeth Roberts Shapard, passed away on June 16, 2022, in Salado Texas after a short illness. 


Known by all as Betty, she was born Feb 5, 1921, to Martha Jordan and T.C. Roberts in Shawnee, Oklahoma. A member of the Chickasaw Nation she attended Christian College in Columbia, Missouri and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1942.


She pledged Delta Delta Delta sorority and majored in Education.


In June 1946 she married Edwin R. Shapard, III MD in Shawnee and lived in Cuba, San Diego, Tennessee, Washington D.C. during her husband's Navy Service.  After his service they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where he entered private practice in OB&GYN.   They retired to Salado Texas where they enjoyed their 50th wedding anniversary.  She was a member of the Salado Methodist Church and Ladies Auxiliary.  


Betty lived a full life traveling, playing golf, and playing bridge with many friends. She lived through the roaring 20’s, the great depression and the dust bowl in Oklahoma.   While in Shawnee, she worked for the Army Air Force in administration helping the Command train pilots for World War II.  She shared many stories of her youth of those times.  After marrying, she spent time in Cuba which was one of her most memorable experiences. Betty was a passionate gardener and golfer.   An ardent football fan and lover of art, she always enjoyed traveling to games and museums.  Yet her love of family sustained her through many years living in Salado.   


Betty is preceded in death by her husband, and son T.C. Shapard. She is survived by her son Bruce M. Shapard and wife Linda.  Daughter, Elizabeth 'Bettina' Plunkett and husband David.


Grandchildren: James Shapard, Christopher Plunkett, Andrew Shapard, Lauren Shapard and


Elizabeth Jordan Plunkett.   Greatgrandchildren, Danielle Plunkett and Camille Nesa.


She will be missed by all.
