Gayla Roberson Obituary

Gayla Sue Roberson, 72, and longtime resident of Andrews, Texas, passed away Tuesday, August 27 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Gayla was born August 27, 1947 in Lubbock, Texas, to Luther and Jessie Swift.  She grew up in Andrews, Texas and graduated from Andrews High in 1966.  Gayla attended Abilene Christian University and graduated in 1970 with a degree in Art.  While attending ACU, she met Jim Roberson of Abilene and they were married June 6, 1970 in Abilene.  Gayla and Jim eventually moved back to Andrews where Gayla began her career as an elementary teacher and art teacher.  On September 8, 1981 their son, John Roberson, was born.  Gayla retired from teaching in 2012 and then moved to Salado, Texas.  Gayla and Jim were members of the Andrews Church of Christ and Salado Church of Christ.

Gayla was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Jessie Swift.

Gayla leaves behind her husband of 49 years, Jim Roberson; son, John Roberson; granddaughter, Kyra Roberson; sister, Nancy Weissman and husband, Joel Weissman of Waco; niece, Lindsay McClain and husband Michael McClain; nephew, Ryan Weissman; brother-in-law, Larry Roberson and wife, Deborah Roberson of Bixby, Oklahoma; and many cousins, loved ones, and friends.

Gayla was a very talented and creative person who loved teaching, traveling, and sharing her passion for art.  She was devoted educator and an active member and officer in the Association of Texas Professional Educators.  She, also, enjoyed sponsoring students on numerous trips to visit museums and historical cities.  She was loved by many who appreciated her sweet spirit, clever sense of humor, and thoughtful ways.  Gayla loved her family and cherished her time spent with John and Kyra.

Services will be held at Broecker Funeral Home in Salado on Saturday, August 31 at 2:00 pm.

The family would like to thank the staff at Luvida Memory Care in Belton for the wonderful care and compassion during the past years.
