Delbert Mattheus Obituary

Services for Delbert Leonard Mattheus, 82, of Salado will be 10 AM, April 30, 2018 at the Historic Chapel of Salado United Methodist Church with Bruce Mercer, chaplain of Kindred Hospice and Dr. David Mosser, pastor of SUMC, officiating. Burial will follow at the SUMC columbarium with military honors.

Delbert Mattheus died April 25, 2018 at Arbor House in Temple. He was born July 21, 1935 in Silverton, TX to Leonard Alfred “LA” Mattheus and Alpha Newberry.

He attended Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, TX.

He married Roma Kemp on October 27, 1978. They have been residents of Salado for 11 years.

Mr. Mattheus served in the US Army with the 181st Signal Corp and received the National Defense Service Medal. After he was discharged, he spent eight years in the Army Reserves. Delbert worked for Southwestern Bell and ATT collectively for 32 years, beginning with the outside plant department, moving into progressively higher management positions in installation, central office, Wire Chief, Test Center Foreman, and various other positions while in West Texas. He, subsequently, moved to Houston to become manager in the claims department before retirement.

An active volunteer all his life, after retirement, Delbert was president of the church council, treasurer, and chairman of the stewardship committee. He also co-managed the construction of the Tinert Recreation Center at St. John Lutheran Church in Bartlett. With SUMC, he was a member of the finance committee and participant in the local and foreign missions outreach by “adopting” two Kenyan children.

He is preceded in death by parents and Roma’s son, Stuart Kemp.

He is survived by his wife, Roma; children: Debra Bradford of Princeton, TX., and Mia Dawson of Lewisville, TX. Also, his first wife, Wanda Mattheus and children: Vicky Mattheus-Roshto and husband Keith of Spring Branch, TX., Sherry Russell and husband Larry of China Springs, TX., and Christy Mattheus Perry of Lubbock, TX. His two “adopted” Kenyan children, Kefa and Newton.

Brothers: Ray A. Mattheus, Tim and wife Diana Mattheus and sister, Lottie Boedecker.

Grandchildren include: Ayla Gaines and husband Joe, Kasen Perry, Patrick Bradford and wife Rachel, Brandy Goddard and husband Bart, Chelsea Bare, Brittney Caraway and husband Justin, and Casey Dawson.

Twelve great grandchildren. Also his current and past church family.
